Writing Skill
Sofa Ink Quarterly promotes writing that focuses on skill
with words and strong storytelling. There is no swearing, no
profaning deity, no explicit gore, no gratuitous violence, and
no explicit sex. These nonreligious stories, articles, and poetry
have neutral to positive endings.
Why and for Whom
Publisher David Cowsert
felt too many of the writing courses and writers’ groups
he worked with emphasized foul language and sensationalist scenes
as an excuse for good writing. Certainly there is a place for
foul language and sensationalism, but they are subordinate to
writing skill and are used as appropriate to the story not as
a means of propping up a hollow plot. Sofa Ink Quarterly gives
writers and artists a positive market without having to include
a religious message or Pollyanna stories.
Readers have embraced the magazine. The original works in each issue are relaxing and refreshing. There is no need to worry whether a child, spouse, or parent will pick up the magazine—it is accessible and enjoyable for anyone.
